FUTUREVISION TO OFFER VIDEO SERVICESOVER ADVANCED BELL NETWORK IN NEW JERSEY

TOMS RIVER, N.J., Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- FutureVision of America Corp. announced today it had signed a 10-year agreement with Bell Atlantic Corporation's (NYSE: BEL) New Jersey Bell unit to lease video dialtone transmission services to approximately 38,000 homes and businesses to be served by a new digital fiber optic network in Dover Township, N.J.
The new network, which will be interactive and switched, is to be constructed beginning next summer. The upgrade will require federal regulatory approval. Once in place, it will provide telephone service as well as advanced video transmission service over the same fiber optic cable. The video and information services planned by FutureVision will deliver improved quality, expanded choice and ease of interaction.
"From day one, this new system will give customers more control over cost and content at their TV set," said Robert Schena, president of FutureVision. "Ultimately, the same way you can use a phone to connect to an almost limitless number of people, you will be able to connect and interact with a virtually limitless supply of video entertainment and information. Our job is to make it easy and fun for Mr. and Mrs. Jones, sitting in their living room, to use this network."
Among the features to be initially offered by FutureVision are the ability to tailor a unique 60-channel lineup to specific interests and needs of a neighborhood. Other features will include on-screen easy interactive ordering of specific programmers or programmer packages and viewer choice of subscription time periods.
BroadBand Technologies, Inc., will be supplying the equipment to N.J. Bell's new network. They have designed the hardware to work with existing TVs and VCRs. The in-home equipment will consist of a set-top box that will automatically give all TVs additional features such as remote volume control and muting, on-screen text and channel display and interactive ordering.
Art Bushkin, president of Bell Atlantic information services, said: "This agreement is evidence of Bell's willingness to cooperate as well as compete with the companies offering video entertainment and information services. We recognize that FutureVision will not only compete with the cable incumbent, but will also quite possibly compete with Bell Atlantic."
"New Jersey Bell has already established the standard in terms of reliability and quality through their phone service," said Schena. "It's only natural that their network evolve to become the transport of choice for all types of electronic communications including video. FutureVision is one of the first of what will ultimately be many new businesses that will come to New Jersey to benefit from this electronic highway of the 21st century."
FutureVision is a privately held company based in Downington, Pa., formed in 1992 for the purpose of managing enhanced electronic information services. The principles bring together backgrounds in engineering, computer software, marketing and general media and cable TV.
