FUNK SOFTWARE UNVEILS PUBLIC WLAN AUTHENTICATION SOLUTION.
With the Steel-Belted Radius/SS7 Gateway, subscribers who require connectivity from a public hotspot can connect using their SIM-based credentials. The Steel-Belted Radius/SS7 Gateway translates the request and conveys it to the GSM operator's HLR-based subscriber management system for authentication and authorization.
Steel-Belted Radius/SS7 Gateway is the result of an OEM agreement between Funk Software and Ulticom, Inc. (NASDAQ:ULCM), a provider of telecommunications signaling software enabling mobility, location, payment, switching, and messaging services. It is currently in evaluation on a variety of GSM operator networks around the world, including those of Singtel and TeliaSonera Finland.
"As a mobile operator that also offers public WLAN services, support for EAP-SIM is very important to our multi-access strategy," said Tommi Mattila, product manager, Enterprise Services, Mobile Data Services, TeliaSonera Finland Oyj. "Now our public WLAN offering HomeRun is glued together with the other access technologies. We have been extremely pleased with Steel-Belted Radius/SS7 Gateway."
The solution provides several benefits for GSM operators including the ability to:
-- Realize new revenue streams from the burgeoning hotspot market without major technology upgrades, because existing authentication, point-of-sale kiosks, customer service, and billing systems can be used to support the new service. Differentiated service offerings - i.e., basic vs. high-speed WLAN access - are also supported when used with compatible hardware.
-- Upsell new services to existing subscribers, because customers can obtain both mobile phone and hotspot service without the need to modify their hardware, deal with two different providers, or pay two different bills.
-- Leverage roaming relationships with other operators, because subscribers can access the public WLAN from hotspot venues serviced by both the GSM provider and its partner operators. Billing is automatically applied according to the existing roaming relationships between providers.
-- Protect subscribers against wireless eavesdropping in the hotspot, because subscriber data is transmitted securely over the wireless link via Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) or dynamic WEP encryption protocols.
Steel-Belted Radius/SS7 Gateway consists of Funk Software's Steel-Belted Radius/Service Provider Edition RADIUS/AAA server with EAP-SIM plug-in module and Ulticom, Inc.'s Signalware SS7 software and interface card, which converts WLAN access requests into GSM MAP/SS7 messages for authentication and authorization purposes
The solution also requires installation of an EAP-SIM-compatible 802.1X access client such as Funk Software's Odyssey Client on the user's wireless computing device.
"GSM operators searching for ways to capitalize on the public hotspot phenomenon need a proven authentication strategy that requires minimal change in existing systems," said Joe Ryan, vice president of Funk Software. "Our SS7 Gateway provides an easy solution using RADIUS/AAA and WLAN security technology that is widely deployed on data networks around the world."
Funk Software is a member of the GSM Association's WLAN Task Force and is actively engaged in EAP-SIM field trials with several GSM operators and WLAN service providers.
