FUJITSU-MOORE 'COMPASS' DEMO AT COMNET SHOWS OFF FETEX-150
CAPABILITY; U S WEST SWITCH FIRST WITH NATIONAL ISDN 1 STANDARD
WASHINGTON, Jan. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Fujitsu Network Switching of America today announced at ComNet that it has installed the first central office switching system in the United States that complies with the new National ISDN 1 standard using Fujitsu's FETEX-150 All-Bandwith switching system as part of a U S WEST COMPASS application field trial.
Steve Fischer, manager of applications for U S WEST, said: "We're looking forward to testing innovative real estate applications with the FETEX-150, just installed in Rochester, Minn., as the first switch with National ISDN 1 standards."
Ken Hovalt, vice president of marketing and sales for FNS, said: "We're extremely happy that we could share in this 'first' with U S WEST, both through the delivery of our first narrowband FETEX-150 central office switching system to a U.S. telephone company, and through the installation of the first central office switch in the U.S. that incorporates National ISDN 1."
The emerging National ISDN 1 standard is a collection of Bellcore technical references that define ISDN interfaces to permit interoperability of customer premises equipment and ISDN-capable switching systems regardless of manufacturer.
Installation of the FETEX-150 in a Rochester central office has just been completed and is being used in COMPASS Project 1 to provide narrowband ISDN to test an advanced multimedia real estate application being offered by Minneapolis-based Moore Data Management Services, a leading provider of Multiple Listing Service nationwide for the real estate industry.
Fischer said: "Following the completion of the real estate ISDN COMPASS trial in the next six months, we plan to continue to provide narrowband ISDN as a tariffed service in the area." He added that "a primary purpose of COMPASS is to develop commercial applications for both narrowband and broadband ISDN, test them, and make them available if a market need is identified. We're excited to work with companies like Fujitsu and Moore Data Management Services to develop applications that deliver the benefits of technology to our customers."
Chuck Champine, manager of corporate telecommunications for Moore Data Management Services, said: "Following the COMPASS trial, we're looking to sell our ISDN product around the country later this year. We feel that ISDN is crucial for the success of our photo imaging products. People don't like to sit there for 40 seconds to two minutes for a color photo to appear on their screen." According to Champine, with the use of ISDN, it will be cost-effective to deliver 6-second color photos and text to real estate brokers with Moore Data Management's multimedia MLS product.
At ComNet, U S West, Fujitsu and Moore Data Management Services will demonstrate the integration of photo images with various real estate listings used in this narrowband ISDN multimedia service.
The multimedia real estate application using narrowband ISDN fully integrates voice, data, image and text communication. In the COMPASS field trial, real estate agents can easily access a database of real estate listings and view photo images of selected homes. Real estate agents will also be able to generate advertisements and print image and text handouts of real estate listings using the multimedia database.
