WHO'D DRIVE IT Just about everybody IF, like me, you're staggered that last week's Budget did nothing to cool the UK's highest ever diesel price of pounds 1.48 a litre, then you need a Ford Fiesta ECOnetic.

Prices kick off at pounds 14,445 and Ford's baby now returns an awesome 85 miles to every gallon, thanks largely to a Dagenham-built, super-efficient 1.6-litre TDCi engine.

There's also a slew of technical tweaks, such as low rolling-resistance tyres, revised gear ratios, start-stop, more efficient air con, alternator and oil pump, lightweight materials, underside aerodynamics and even a non-slip fan belt. There's also an ECOnetic Fiesta van from just pounds 12,215.

You may not care it emits just 87g/km CO2, which means free road tax and no congestion charge, but you'll be interested in what it can do for your finances.

Families doing 12,000 miles in a 40mpg diesel motor pay pounds 2,050 in fuel a year. The same mileage in an ECOnetic costs pounds 961 - a saving of more than 50 per cent. Looks like the ECOnetic has just become Britain's most desirable supermini.
