LONDON'S top-flight shares closed lower yesterday after official figures revealed the UK economy shrank in the fourth quarter and delivered a blow to recovery hopes.

The Footsie closed 26.1 points lower, at 5,917.7, after the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said gross domestic product declined by 0.5% between October and December. Meanwhile, on Wall Street, the Dow Jones Index fell 3.33 (0.03%), to finish at 11,977.19; the S&P rose 0.34 (0.03%), to close at 1,291.18; and the Nasdaq rose 1.7 (0.06%), to finish at 2,719.25.
