FTD TO ENTER 1-800 NUMBER BUSINESS
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Florists' Transworld

Delivery Association (FTD(R) announced today that it will enter the convenience shopping business with a consumer direct access program called 1-800-SEND-FTD. The new program, which includes a "flowers-by- phone" catalog for consumers, is slated to begin at the end of the first quarter of 1993.
According to John Borden, executive vice president of FTD, the 1-800-SEND-FTD program is designed to help FTD Member Florists capture the 'convenience shopper' market, which consists of approximately 96 million consumers who purchase products by phone or mail. "Convenience shopping has grown into a $21 billion industry, but less than 10 percent of 'convenience shopper' consumers purchase flowers," explained Borden. "1-800-SEND-FTD will give consumers a way to access more than 24,000 FTD Member Florists anytime, anywhere, and it allows all FTD Member Florists a fair and equitable way to share in this program," Borden added.
The 1-800-SEND-FTD program is the most recent in a string of new products and services created by FTD to support its Member Florists. Last month, FTD entered the greeting card business with the acquisition of Renaissance Greeting Cards of Sanford, Maine, and in the last year FTD has created branded bouquets in association with major companies such as Campbell's, M&M Mars, and Gerber.
FTD, headquartered just outside of Detroit in Southfield, Mich., was founded in 1910 by 15 retail florists who agreed to exchange orders for out-of-town floral deliveries, and today is owned and directed by more than 24,000 independent retail Member Florists in the United States and Canada. In the 1991-92 fiscal year, Member Florists delivered more than 19.5 million FTD flowers-by-wire orders which generated sales of more and $676 million.
