FTD - THE WORLD'S LARGEST FLORAL NETWORK - LAUNCHES NATIONAL 800 NUMBER TO CAPTURE THE COUNTRY'S MORE THAN 96 MILLION CONVENIENCE SHOPPERS

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Florists' Transworld Delivery Association (FTD(R)) announces the launch of a national 800 telephone service and a national floral catalog. The 1-800-SEND-FTD program is targeted to the country's more than 96 million convenience shoppers in time for the busy spring sentiment expression season.
Consumers will have 24-hour access to a floral advisor and can place orders anytime, anywhere, by simply dialing the easy-to-remember toll- free telephone number -- 1-800-SEND-FTD (736-3383). Orders will be fulfilled by participating FTD Member Florists nationwide. Unlike several other floral wire services, each arrangement will be prepared and arranged by an experienced professional florist. Additionally, FTD will provide a shop-at-home catalog and a money-back freshness guarantee on all orders.
"1-800-SEND-FTD and its accompanying catalog is the closest thing to having a florist shop in your home," said Merlin Olsen, FTD spokesperson. "Americans are on the move. They demand convenience and look for it in all aspects of their lives. But we also know that convenience isn't enough. Today's consumers seek quality products and services, plus added value. The 1-800-SEND-FTD program responds to consumer demands -- nationally-recognized, top-quality products, guaranteed satisfaction, and, of course, convenience," he added.
According to Direct Access Inc. President, Jerry J. Schillinger, "The use of 800 numbers is staggering. It has been estimated that convenience shoppers placed more than 16 billion telephone calls in 1992 and spent approximately $21 billion. And those numbers are expected to increase through 1995. Clearly, consumers enjoy the convenience of shopping by phone. But it is important to note that consumers must first feel confident in the quality of the product and/or service. The companies that succeed with 800 services are those with trusted brand names and traditions of quality."
In addition to a money-back freshness guarantee, anyone who calls 1-800-SEND-FTD is entitled to a 32-page color catalog featuring FTD arrangements. Flowers are grouped according to sentiment and/or holiday to make the decision process easier. Until now, consumers were unable to receive a shop-at-home FTD catalog.
For more information on the new FTD national 800 number and catalog, consumers are encouraged to call 1-800-SEND-FTD. A free catalog is available to all upon request. No purchase is required.
FTD, headquartered just outside of Detroit in Southfield, Michigan, was founded in 1910 by 15 retail florists who agreed to exchange orders for out-of-town floral deliveries. Today, FTD is owned and directed by more than 24,000 independent retail Member Florists in the United States and Canada. FTD's new direct marketing company, Direct Access Inc., was launched in February 1993 and is headquartered in Chicago. In the 1991- 92 fiscal year, Member Florists delivered more than 19.5 million FTD flowers-by-wire orders, which generated sales of more than $676 million.
