FROM THE EDITOR.
PE's Additives Annual is a compilation of the past year's product releases. We've included some information on the market outlook for plastics additives; and with the assistance of BRG Townsend, Inc., a well-known consulting firm in the plastics additives market, we'll address the additives market.
The good news is that the market for plastics additives continues to gain momentum. After taking a slight hit in the second half of the 90's, market demand for products including antistats, antioxidants, colorants, coupling agents, flame retardants and smoke suppressants, processing aids, and mold-release agents is on the rise.
What's affecting additives
Environmental issues were a part of the recent Presidential election in this country; and environmental issues, perhaps of a different nature, also have become increasingly important for the plastics additives market. According to a recent report by BRG Townsend, environmental issues have a significant impact on the growth and profitability of a wide range of plastics.
BRG Townsend reported that the environmental factors that management has to deal with include conflicting health-risk claims, consumer perceptions, the so-called "green" competition that exists among host plastics, new, potentially more expensive technologies, recyclability and workplace safety.
Townsend's study explores the effects of these issues on seven major categories of plastics additives including antioxidants, flame retardants, heat stabilizers, impact modifiers, light stabilizers, lubricants, and plasticizers. The report also looks into other categories of additives from an environmental/market vantage point.
