FROM THE EDITOR.

Welcome to the Birmingham Sports Awards 2015.

The Birmingham Mail and our sister newspaper, The Birmingham Post, are delighted to once again celebrate sporting achievement in its many forms.

Judges had a tough time selecting the winners this year.

I know because I was one of them.

What particularly impressed us was not only the quality of the entries, but also the remarkable diversity of sports represented. Yes, of course, there was football, cricket, athletics and swimming.

We fully expected that.

What we hadn't predicted was the growing number of niche sports putting themselves firmly on the city's sporting map. Ultimate frisbee, canoe polo, trampolining, kabbadi, women's American football...

These were just some of the sports vying for the judges' attention.

And it wasn't just peerless performance on the field of play. There were some remarkable individuals working hard behind the scenes to keep sport alive, and breathe new life into their communities.

From the man running a youth club in a shipping container to the woman who tops up the sweetie jar at the swim club, they are champions all. And we are privileged to share their stories with you.

The technological revolution has moved the goalposts of the newspaper industry.

Our online audiences continue to see phenomenal growth, building on the print products that have been on offer for many years.

Every day more than 250,000 people - yes, a quarter of a million - read our content via website, tablet, mobile and newspaper. We know that sport plays an important part in their lives, and our sports content is a key factor in our success.

So good luck to all the nominees, and thank you to our co-organisers Champions (UK) plc for their support.

Have a great night and a great future.
