FREUDENBERG-NOK TO ADD VIBRATION CONTROL PRODUCTION IN MEXICO

PLYMOUTH, Mich., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- To meet the growing needs of its automotive customers in Mexico, Freudenberg-NOK has announced plans to produce vibration control dampers such as engine mounts and torsional and half-shaft dampers at its facility in Cuautla, Mexico, said Joseph C. Day, Freudenberg-NOK's president and CEO.
"Freudenberg-NOK is investing $3 million over the next three years in vibration damper production to help OE customers such as Volkswagen, Chrysler, Perkins and Nissan meet requirements for local content," according to William J. Tobin, Freudenberg-NOK vice president - Mexican Operations. "In addition to purchasing new machinery, this money will be used to install lean manufacturing cells like those the company uses in its U.S. facilities to boost quality, reduce cost and enhance responsiveness to customers."
Tobin said the addition of vibration dampers to its Mexican facility is strictly to supply the Mexican automobile market. He said that this move will not transfer any current work or jobs from the United States, but will expand the company's Mexican employment by generating new business.
The company already produces automotive seals, gaskets, brake components and O-rings in its Cuautla facility, which has been manufacturing automotive components since 1975.
Vibration dampers are rubber-bonded-to-metal components that are used in powertrain and chassis locations to reduce excessive noise and vibration created by the engine. With consumers demanding quieter, smoother-riding cars, automakers are increasingly turning to Freudenberg-NOK -- a leader in this field -- for systems solutions to noise and vibration problems on today's lighter vehicles.
With some of the most sophisticated vibration test facilities in North America, Freudenberg-NOK has designed vibration control systems for many world-class vehicles on the road today.
A success story among automotive suppliers in adopting lean manufacturing practices, Freudenberg-NOK is utilizing the lean philosophy to produce precision seals, molded rubber and plastic components, vibration control products and automotive rebuild kits. This practice, which has helped the company to nearly double its sales over four years, has significantly reduced waste, inventories and lead time and has improved labor productivity by almost 50 percent.
One of the fastest-growing independent suppliers to the North American automotive industry, Freudenberg-NOK was established in 1989 as a general partnership between Freudenberg & Company of Germany and NOK Corporation of Japan to serve the North American market. The company operates 14 major facilities and employs about 3,600 people in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
