FRESH FIELDS NAMED STORE OF THE YEAR BY MONEY MAGAZINE

ROCKVILLE, Md., Dec. 1 ~PRNewswire~ -- Money magazine has named the Rockville-based Fresh Fields supermarket chain as its 1993 Store of the Year.
In its December issue, now at newsstands, Money magazine says that Fresh Fields "is riding the crest of a mighty trend -- eating for health," and represents the latest in food shopping because it sells "good for you foods and products in snazzy supermarkets."
Money magazine says that the privately owned company, which first opened for business in May 1991, has already generated revenues of $50 million.
Fresh Fields' five stores are located in Rockville and Bethesda, Md., and Tyson's Corner, Alexandria and Charlottesville, Va.
President Mark Ordan said Fresh Fields enables "health-conscious food shoppers to purchase all the products they need under one roof. But we are not a health food store. We are a healthy food store."
He said Fresh Fields is different from other supermarkets because of its "good for you foods" concept. The full-size, full-service stores serve consumers who prefer healthier, more nutritious foods that are clearly explained and reasonably priced.
The merchandise is selected according to Fresh Fields' high standards, called "Guiding Principles of Good For You Foods."
Each Fresh Fields store sells more than 10,000 different items in the traditional supermarket categories including produce, bulk foods, groceries, meat and poultry, fish, cheese and dairy, deli, prepared foods, bakery, and nutrition and body care.
Fresh Fields is scheduled to open new stores next year in Richmond and Fairfax, Va.; Annapolis, Md.; Chicago; Philadelphia; and other markets in the Northeast.
Fresh Fields is the collaborative brainchild of three professionals from different disciplines.
Chairman Leo Kahn was formerly principal shareholder and CEO of the Purity Supreme and Heartland chain of supermarkets in New England and founder of the Staples office-supply stores.
Ordan was an investment banker at Goldman Sachs and director of operations for New York-based Harvey Electronics.
Chief Operating Officer Jack Murphy previously managed operations for the Heartland Supermarket chain in New England.
