FRENCH FANCY; The unexcitable detective is back, and ooh la la, is he thinking of romance, asks Mademoiselle Claire Murphy.

PICK OF THE WEEK
Maigret Easter Sunday, ITV, 9pm
This is Rowan Atkinson's third outing as the 1950s copper, so we really ought to stop mentioning Mr Bean or Blackadder (whoops). It's just that he's so iconic in those roles that initially it was hard to take this slow-moving pipe smoker seriously. His character is so still and understated, it's as if Rowan is frightened to move that extremely expressive face at all. In fact, everything about this series goes at the pace of un escargot.
Settling into the part now, we gather that Maigret - nobody calls him by his first name, not even his wife - is an iceberg, with hidden depths and sorrows. He and his chain-smoking team are called to a remote crossroads outside the city after a diamond merchant (that nice Sergeant Noakes from Call The Midwife) has been shot.
As he attempts to solve the murder, Maigret comes up against a blustering colleague (Kevin McNally), a sinister suspect (Tom Wlaschiha from Game Of Thrones, right) and his damaged, minxy sister (Mia Jexen, far right).
You'll have a hunch that he's feeling more than just sleuthing urges towards her - but the most active he gets is putting out a match or lighting her cigarette. Talk about a slow burn...

Hmm, now then... who's the baddie and who's the love interest?
