FREEMAN SIGNS INTERIM AGREEMENT WITH UMWA; STRIKE ACTION AVERTED

WASHINGTON, June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Freeman Energy Corporation/Freeman United Coal Corporation has become the third major coal producer to reach a separate labor agreement with the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). The Illinois-based corporation signed an interim agreement with the union today, which averted a possible strike action.
Approximately 1,000 UMWA miners are employed at four Illinois mines owned by the corporation.
"The UMWA is pleased to join in this interim agreement with Freeman Energy/Freeman United because they have rejected the old-style, adversarial approach taken by the Bituminous Coal Operators' Association (BCOA), which has been so damaging to the health of the coal industry," said Richard Trumka, president of the UMWA.
"We look forward to working with Freeman Energy/Freeman United to create the kind of partnership that will usher in a new era of progress in the coal industry," Trumka added. "We can only hope that BCOA will soon afford our members the same respect that Freeman Energy/Freeman United has."
Last week, CLI, Inc., left the BCOA after signing an interim agreement with the UMWA. CLI's action came two weeks after similar steps were taken by AMAX, Inc.
The UMWA continues contract talks with a separate coalition of major coal producers, the Independent Bituminous Coal Bargaining Alliance (IBCBA). The IBCBA was formed by coal companies which share the UMWA's desire to promote a more positive labor-management relationship in the coal industry.
