FREE BONE SCANS OFFERED TO OSTEOPOROSIS PATIENTS
 IN COOPERATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM
COLLEGEVILLE, Penn., Sept. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- A new education program for postmenopausal osteoporosis patients, including free bone scans, has been introduced in collaboration with physicians across the country by Rhone-Poulenc Rorer Pharmaceuticals (RPR).
Bone scans are not normally included in a routine physical examination but with "Compliments of Calcimar," patients can have a free bone scan and their physicians can use the results to establish a baseline of bone mineral density to determine strength and fracture risk. Physicians can then advise their patients about any necessary preventive measure that might be appropriate. It is estimated that one third of all women will experience and osteoporotic fracture at some point during their lifetime.
"Called 'Compliments of Calcimar,' the program is designed to make it easier for patients and physicians to understand osteoporosis and its effective treatment," said Steven C. Downs, vice president of RPR, makers of Calcimar(R) (calcitonin-salmon) Injection, Synthetic, for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. "The benefit of the program will be the improved health of thousands of osteoporosis patients. 'Compliments of Calcimar' is part of RPR's commitment to womens' health and postmenopausal osteoporosis patients," Downs said.
The "Compliments of Calcimar" program is designed to educate patients about various issues relating to postmenopausal osteoporosis and, at the same time, to help offset the cost of treatment. Patient enrollees who follow their physicians's treatment regimen receive free samples of Calcimar, Calel-D calcium dietary supplement, and educational materials. Most important, patients also receive a certificate entitling them to a free bone scan. Bone scan measurements can be used for early detection of bone loss and to monitor progress of therapy.
Bone scanning -- or dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry -- is a painless yet extremely precise method of diagnosing osteoporosis and monitoring therapy. It can provide an effective measurement to determine bone density at the onset of menopause and to monitor the patient before and after treatment for osteoporosis begins.
For patients diagnosed with osteoporosis or considered at risk for developing the condition, complying with doctor recommended osteoporosis therapy is critical. Many physicians have become concerned that their patients may discontinue stop taking their medication when the pain stops.
According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, osteoporosis, a devastating disease, currently affects more than 25 million American women. Pain, disfigurement, limited physical activity, and hip fractures are all associated with this disease. Studies show that osteoporosis contributes to 1.3 million fractures per year and accounts for up to $10 billion dollars of total U.S. health care expenditure.
These statistics are increasing as baby boomers approach menopause. For this reason, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has identified osteoporosis as one of the top health care issues of the '90s. Postmenopausal osteoporosis is the primary symptom of the disease.
Calcimar is approved by the FDA for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis in conjunction with adequate calcium and vitamin D to prevent the progressive loss of bone mass, and "aids in improving patient's quality of life," stated Dr. R. Franchesini in his article published in "Current Therapeutic Research."
