FREE ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION MEMBERSHIPS ARE OFFERED,
 COMPLIMENTS OF SMITHKLINE BEECHAM
PHILADELPHIA, June 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Americans can now receive free memberships in the premier organization that helps people with arthritis -- the Arthritis Foundation -- compliments of SmithKline Beecham, maker of the new medication Relafen(R) (nabumetone).
The Arthritis Foundation offers a wide array of information and special programs that help individuals with arthritis lead independent, active lives. For example, members receive a subscription to the foundation's national consumer magazine, Arthritis Today, and have access to local self-help courses, newsletters, and educational events. Membership contribution is regularly $20.00 or more.
Now, 100,000 individuals across the country can benefit from this special offer by visiting a physician to receive cards good for a one-year, first-time membership in the Arthritis Foundation.
"We salute SmithKline Beecham for encouraging individuals with arthritis not only to seek a physician's care, but also to take advantage of the many Arthritis Foundation services that can help them lead a better life with arthritis," said Don L. Riggin, president and chief executive officer of the Arthritis Foundation. Six million of the 37 million Americans with arthritis, a chronic condition causing pain and inflammation of the joints, have never consulted a physician about their condition.
"Comprehensive care is the key to an improved quality of life for people with arthritis," said Dr. J.P. Garnier, president, North America Pharmaceuticals, SmithKline Beecham. "We recognize that medicine is one essential component of comprehensive care, but educational materials, support groups, and self-help programs such as those offered by the Arthritis Foundation also are important."
The Arthritis Foundation, headquartered in Atlanta, has 70 chapters nationwide. Its mission is to support research to find the cure for and prevention of arthritis and to improve the quality of life for those affected by arthritis.
SmithKline Beecham is a worldwide research-intensive health-care company with an annual research budget of more than $800 million.
SmithKline Beecham scientists focus on the discovery of drugs to treat infection, cardiovascular disease, central nervous system disorders, and gastrointestinal disease, in addition to arthritis.
For more information about free membership in the Arthritis Foundation, individuals should contact their physician. Physicians can receive free brochures and membership cards, while supplies last, from their SmithKline Beecham medical representative.
