FRED MEYER ANNOUNCES REOPENING OF BELLEVUE STORE IN THREE PHASES
PORTLAND, Ore., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Fred Meyer announced today it plans to reopen the Bellevue, Wash., store in three phases over the next six weeks after a portion of the roof collapsed on Monday, July 27.
The Bellevue Fred Meyer store is comprised of two separate buildings built at different times by different companies and leased by Fred Meyer in 1975 to create a single store. The damage occurred in the building that houses the store's nonfood products. The failure of a hanger assembly caused one 51-foot roof beam to fall, which opened a hole in the roof and damaged two adjacent hanger assemblies.
Subsequent inspection of the store has resulted in the development of a program to reopen the store in three phases.
Phase I involves reopening the building that houses most of the food department by Aug. 5. A thorough inspection of that building showed that it is structurally sound and all beams and beam hangers are safe. The City of Bellevue gave Fred Meyer the go-ahead Friday to reopen the grocery area pending the completion and inspection of a temporary wall between the food and nonfood sections of the store.
Phases II and II repair all damage caused by the accident and reinforce the roof support structure of the entire nonfood building to assure safety and meet uniform building code requirements. More than 100 beam connectors will be reinforced.
Phase II primarily focuses on the area of the store damaged by the falling beam, which includes the east entrance and restaurant areas, several tenant spaces, and the service deli and bakery sections of the food department. In addition, access will be provided to the two tenants just inside the west entrance of the store. Phase II is scheduled for completion by Aug. 24, at which time the remainder of the food department and the tenant spaces will be open to the public.
Phase III involves reinforcing all remaining support beam hanger assemblies, enabling the rest of the Bellevue store to be opened by mid-September at the latest.
