FRANKEL TO HEAD MUSEUM AGENCY; MUSEUMS APPLAUD CLINTON CHOICE

WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The White House announced last night that the president intends to nominate Diane Frankel, executive director of the Bay Area Discovery Museum, a children's museum in Sausalito, Calif., to be director of the Institute of Museum Services (IMS).
The IMS for which the Clinton administration has proposed $28 million for fiscal year 1994, serves the entire museum community, with funds for operating support, museum assessments, conservation and other purposes.
Reaction to the intended nomination has been strongly positive. "This is a wonderful choice," said Patricia E. Williams, deputy director for programs and policy at American Association of Museums (AAM). "The IMS is critical for the whole museum community. We are thrilled that the new director will be someone who understands museums from the inside and who has long experience as a museum educator and director. She will be terrific."
Frankel has a master's degree in museum studies from George Washington University and has served previously as assistant director of education at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She has also served in two capacities at the John F. Kennedy University (Orinda, Calif.): as director of its center for museum studies and as dean of its school of liberal and professional arts. As founding director of the Discovery Museum, she led a $6.5 million capital campaign to create a museum that serves children of the whole San Francisco area.
Headquartered in Washington, the American Association of Museums is the national association representing the concerns of the museum community as a whole. AAM assesses museum programs and accredits museums; provides education and training for museum professionals; operates international museum programs and advocates for the advancement of museums. Since its founding in 1906, AAM has grown to include more than 12,700 members, including 9,000 museum professionals, 2,700 museums and 1,100 library and corporate members.
