 FRANK BORMAN ELECTED TO AMERICAN SUPERCONDUCTOR BOARD;
 FORMER ASTRONAUT ASSUMES SEAT VACATED BY RETIRING MEMBER
 WATERTOWN, Mass., May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Frank Borman, chairman and CEO of Patlex Corporation and a 16-year veteran of Eastern Airlines' management team, has been elected to the board of directors of American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC), the firm announced today.
 Borman, a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel and former astronaut in the Gemini and Apollo space programs, assumes the board seat of Jess Belser, who has retired from the board. The election is effective immediately.
 Borman also serves on the board of directors of The Home Depot, National Geographic, Outboard Marine Corporation, Auto Finance Group and Thermo Instrument Systems. Additionally, he is a member of the board of regents of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
 Prior to Patlex, Borman was with Eastern Airlines in a range of senior management positions. He served as chairman and CEO from 1976 until his retirement in 1986, and remains involved in the airline industry as vice chairman of the board of Continental Airlines Holding, Inc.
 "We are pleased to have as accomplished an individual as Col. Borman on our board," said Gregory J. Yurek, president and CEO of American Superconductor. "In his career, Frank Borman has seen science leave the lab and become a reality. He understands the commitment to being on the cutting edge of technology. His exceptional expertise and distinguished background are valuable assets to us as we continue to grow."
 Belser, president and CEO of Rothschild Ventures, had been a director of American Superconductor since 1988. He resigned due to an increasingly crowded schedule and to his conviction that the firm has reached a stage where the board is more appropriately comprised of persons with operating experience than by venture capitalists.
 "Jess has contributed significantly to the company's development," Yurek said. "We accepted his resignation with regret, and with much appreciation for his years of service and guidance."
 Based in Las Cruces, N.M., Patlex holds several patents on laser technology, and licenses manufacturers which use the technology. The company was formed in 1979 to license the laser patents of Gordon Gould, inventor of the laser.
 American Superconductor creates, develops and manufactures high-temperature superconducting wires, coils and cable conductors and integrates them with the required cooling technologies. The firm is the largest industrial effort in the world dedicated to the commercial development of such products.
