FRANCK RIBERY retired from international football when injury forced him to miss the World Cup in Brazil.

Fair enough - Ribery will be 35 when the next World Cup comes round and he has decided to call it a day.

So it was absolute nonsense for Michel Platini to threaten Ribery with suspension and stop him from playing for Bayern Munich if he did not answer a call-up to play for France this week. Forcing a footballer out of international retirement is probably a violation of his human rights.

But far more worrying is that Platini was prepared to invoke a FIFA law to suspend Ribery - because this is the man who would like to take over from Sepp Blatter as head of world football.

I wonder if Platini would answer the call if France called him up for a friendly international in the back of beyond?
