FPL SIGNS CONTRACT TO BUY ELECTRICITY
MIAMI, Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida Power & Light Company has

signed a 30-year contract to buy electricity from an independently owned generating plant proposed for construction in Okeechobee County by Cypress Energy Partners, a limited partnership formed to undertake the venture.
FPL, which will use the electricity to serve its customers, expects the power plant to come into service during 1997 and help the utility meet its increasing energy needs. Cypress Energy Partners plans to build the two-unit, 832-megawatt facility 10 miles northwest of the city of Okeechobee. A megawatt is 1,000 kilowatts, enough electricity to serve approximately 300 homes.
The partnership is between the designer, Black & Veatch Power Development Corp. of Kansas City, Mo. and NRG Energy Inc., an affiliate of Northern States Power, Minneapolis, Minn. The plant will burn pulverized coal and employ state-of-the-art emissions control equipment.
The contract must be approved by the Florida Public Service Commission after a public hearing to assure the project is the most cost-effective alternative to satisfy FPL's generating capacity needs, and by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. The proposed plant also must be approved by various other governmental agencies.
Florida Power & Light Company is one of the nation's largest investor-owned utilities and is the principal subsidiary of FPL Group, Inc. (NYSE: FPL).
