FPL NEWS MEDIA SUMMARY: HURRICANE ANDREW RESTORATION REPORT
MIAMI, Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The following comments are from FPL President Steve Frank:
-- Thanks to efforts by crews from FPL and other utilities, company has made significant progress since our 5 p.m. report on Tuesday. Of the 1.4 million customers who lost service because of Hurricane Andrew, we have now restored more than 800,000. Included in that total are 190,000 customers who were restored since last night's report. This morning, approximately 590,000 customers remain out of service.
-- Pleased to report that restoration is complete in Palm Beach County; restoration in Naples area on the west coast will be complete by tonight. The total of Naples area customers still out is down to approximately 1,600 this morning.
-- Completion of work in Palm Beach and Collier counties means FPL can move more crews today and Thursday into Broward and Dade counties; we continue to have more than 2,000 crew members working on restoration of service. FPL is receiving excellent support not only from other utilities, but also from suppliers who are expediting the flow of equipment and material necessary to do the job. Bob Marshall will provide greater detail on outages and crew activities.
-- Although we are pleased with progress in reducing number of customers without power to date, it is important to understand that the rate of improvement will slow somewhat as crews work in areas where damage to FPL facilities has been heaviest. To put it simply, we have completed the easiest restoration efforts.
-- Before Bob Marshall and Bill Hamilton provide you greater detail, an important reminder: FPL continues to stress that public and employee safety remains the number one priority. People should stay away from any downed utility lines and keep clear of crews working in their neighborhoods. FPL appreciates the news media's efforts to communicate safety messages and ask for your continued support.
