FPL HURRICANE ANDREW RESTORATION OVERVIEW

 FPL HURRICANE ANDREW RESTORATION OVERVIEW
MIAMI, Sept. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Comments from FPL Chairman of the

Board and CEO Jim Broadhead:
On this morning of day 10 in FPL's hurricane restoration effort, crews are working to restore power to an estimated 170,000 customer accounts remaining without electricity in Dade County. Keep in mind that included within that number are many customers whose homes have been destroyed or condemned and who are not able to use power if it were available. Bill Hamilton will report on that situation in a few minutes.
FPL has now restored approximately 89 percent of the 1.4 million customer accounts that were left without service when Hurricane Andrew passed through South Florida. These gains continue the steady progress we expected this week, and at the slower rate of improvement that also was anticipated. We continue to work around the clock, and crews remain on 12- to 16-hour shifts. FPL expects to increase the number of field crew members in Dade County from 3,300 to approximately 4,000 by the weekend as more of the system damage is surveyed and assigned for repair or replacement.
The movement of crews and material around Dade continues to be hampered by heavy traffic. The drivers who delivered 38 tractor-trailer loads of supplies on Wednesday in many cases struggled for hours to reach their destination. We continue to ask that motorists stay off the roads as much as possible so that the 3,000-plus utility trucks we are using in this effort can travel to work sites as quickly as possible.
