FOXVIDEO ADOPTS COPY PROTECTION IDENTIFICATION PROGRAM
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- FoxVideo and Macrovision Corp. announced that FoxVideo has signed a contract with Macrovision to copy protect all of its rental and sell-through titles in 1992. FoxVideo plans to utilize the generic copy protection logo to communicate to retailers and distributors the fact that individual titles are copy protected.
Robert Dellelis, president of FoxVideo, said, "In the past year more and more retailers have become aware of the value of copy protection. With close to 30 percent of all VCR households having two or more VCRs, it is possible for a large percentage of the population to engage in illegal home taping. Retailers know that non-copy protected cassettes rent fewer times and result in fewer than expected sales because consumers can copy, view, save, or give away illegal dubs whenever they want. We are proud to offer copy protection as a feature to our customers, and we will communicate that fact during the solicitation period."
The copy protection logo is designed to be readable to 3/16 inch square, and it can easily fit on ad slicks, announcement sheets and distributor catalogs without requiring much space. It is similar in size to the closed caption logo. FoxVideo intends to initiate its copy protection identification program on its upcoming releases of Grand Canyon, Naked Lunch, The Aliens Triple Pack and others.
Bill Krepick, Macrovision's vice president, Sales/Marketing, stated, "FoxVideo is taking the industry lead with this action. This is a clear message to the retailers that FoxVideo supports their business. Copy protection increases rental legs and contributes to added revenues for both rental and sell-through. Retailers can increase their margins and have more dollars available for open-to- buy. Retailers will be informed on a title-by-title basis, before they make their purchase decision, about the presence of the copy protection feature."
Macrovision develops technologies for the protection of video information from unauthorized copying an unauthorized viewing. The company provides products and services for the home video, cable, satellite and corporate communications markets. Macrovision has field offices in New York, London and Tokyo, with corporate offices in Mountain View.
