FOX 29 KITN-TV OFFERS CABLE 60-DAY STATUS QUO EXTENSION OF OCT. 6 RETRANSMISSION DATE -- DEC. 7 IS NEW DEADLINE

MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- FOX 29 KITN-TV has offered local cable systems a free status quo extension of the Oct. 6 retransmission consent deadline to insure that local cable viewers will have uninterrupted access to FOX 29's programming while FOX concludes its negotiations with MSOs.
"This offer is in keeping with FOX's overall cable-friendly strategy and is in response to several major MSO's publicly voiced suggestion that broadcasters voluntarily grant these extensions," KITN-TV General Manager Gail Brekke said. "We want to give all parties breathing room to finalize negotiations in progress. We are optimistic that the agreements between FOX and the MSOs will be concluded within this new time frame."
Under these agreements, cable operators have the opportunity to purchase from FOX, the new F/X entertainment channel, which will be exclusive to cable subscribers; it is contemplated that the service will be scrambled. The cable operators will then be permitted to retransmit their local FOX affiliate station (KITN-TV FOX 29 here) without having to pay a retransmission consent fee, for up to five years.
To date, 13 MSOs serving 20 million subscribers reaching over 25 percent of all U.S. cable households have been signed. Signed are: Triax Communications and Bresnan Communications; Newhouse Broadcasting Co.; Adelphia Communications Corp.; TKR Cable Co.; Booth America Co.; COX Cable Communications, Inc.; Times Mirror Cable Television; Viacom Cable; Telecable Corporation; Prime Cable and InterMedia Partners and TCI.
In Minnesota, 25,000 subscribers in 20 communities, including Lake Minnetonka, are served by Triax Midwest; Bresnan Communications serves approximately 7,000 subscribers in the Brainerd area; TCI serves approximately 82,000 subscribers and Intermedia Partner's Midwest Cablevision serves approximately 33,000 subscribers in Minnesota.
