FOURNIER FURNITURE TO EXPAND VIRGINIA FACILITIES

HIGH POINT, N.C., Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- LADD Furniture, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: LADF) vice chairman Gerald R. Grubbs announced today that Fournier Furniture, Inc., one of LADD's operating companies, will undertake a $3.5 million expansion of its St. Paul, Va. manufacturing complex. According to Grubbs, the expansion will double the current size of Fournier's St. Paul facilities.
"In addition," Grubbs said, "a state-of-the-art integrated and automated ready-to-assemble ("RTA") furniture production line will be installed, ensuring world class competitiveness at the Virginia facility." The H.S. Williams Company of Marion, Va., has been selected as the project's contractor, while Stiles Machinery, Inc., of Grand Rapids, Mich. will install the production equipment.
Gregg J. Sammons, Fournier's president, said, "We are delighted to announce this major expansion. Since Fournier became associated with LADD earlier this year, the company has developed a number of substantial new growth opportunities, particularly with large regional retailers and mass merchandisers -- some of whom were already doing business with other LADD furniture companies." He concluded, "Fournier is now taking advantage of LADD's years of experience in furniture design and finishes to upgrade its product line, and we anticipate substantial future sales increases for our company."
Headquartered in Minneapolis, Minn., Fournier Furniture is a major manufacturer of RTA household furniture. Founded in Canada 20 years ago, Fournier employs 450 people and, in addition to the St. Paul, Va., plant, operates a major sales, marketing and distribution center in Toronto, Canada. The company's products are marketed under the Fournier brand name through mass merchandisers, home improvement stores, department stores, office super stores, and traditional furniture retail outlets. Fournier was acquired by LADD in early July of this year.
LADD is one of the largest U.S. residential and contract furniture manufacturers with annual sales of approximately $500 million and total employment of nearly 7,000. In addition to Fournier, LADD's other major furniture brand names include American Drew, American of Martinsville, Barclay, Brown Jordan, Clayton Marcus, Daystrom, Design Horizons, Lea Industries and Pennsylvania House. LADD also owns and operates two support companies, Lea Lumber & Plywood and LADD Transportation.
