FOUR LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN CALIFORNIA SELECT MD 520N, WORLD'S QUIETEST HELICOPTER, FOR PATROL DUTIES

MESA, Ariz., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The McDonnell Douglas MD 520N is making quite an impression on law enforcement agencies in California, with four agencies recently adding the world's quietest helicopter to their aerial support units.
They represent a growing number of law enforcement units nationwide that continue to select MD 500 Series helicopters for patrol duties.
Police departments in Huntington Beach, Glendale and Burbank have taken delivery of their new MD 520Ns. The San Jose Police Department will accept its new MD 520N in Mesa this month.
Additionally, the Oakland Police Department is adding its second MD 500E for patrol in Northern California, and the Puerto Rico Police Department shortly will take delive ?of its second and third MD 500Es.
"In the case of San Jose, the MD 520N's unique quiet operation directly resulted in its selection over the competition," said Don Bachali, manager of law enforcement business development for McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Co.
Bachali said that many communities such as San Jose are becoming more sensitive to helicopter noise and are demanding more stringent noise standards for patrol aircraft.
The MD 520N features the revolutionary NOTAR(R) anti-torque system, which enables the helicopter to fly without a conventional tail rotor. It also makes the helicopter 50 percent quieter than its nearest competition.
"The MD 520N exceeds the strictest noise guidelines anticipated from the Federal Aviation Administration and is setting the standard for good neighbor operations," Bachali added.
The Phoenix Police Department set the pace for law enforcement last year when it became the first law enforcement agency to fly MD 520Ns. Today, the department has logged more than 5,000 patrol hours on its seven MD 520Ns.
Glendale and Huntington Beach have the distinction of being the first two police units in California to accept MD 520N helicopters.
In all, some 50 law enforcement agencies worldwide fly McDonnell Douglas helicopters.
"MD 500 Series helicopters continue to be the aircraft of choice for law enforcement because of their compact size, ease of operation and outstanding performance," Bachali explained. "With the addition of the MD 520N, law enforcement agencies can now add unmatched quiet' to the list of reasons to fly MD 500s."
