FOSSIL EFFICIENCY CONTINUES TO IMPROVE AT DUKE POWER
CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Improved efficiency at Duke Power Co.'s (NYSE: DUK) eight coal-fired plants saved customers about $2.5 million during 1991, said company officials today.
The results were made public in conjunction with the announcement of the company's C.A. Dewey Award to Cliffside Steam Station Unit 5 in Cliffside for best improvement in efficiency in 1991.
The Rutherford County unit reported an improvement of 157.41 percent during 1991 -- edging out Dan River Unit 2, located near Eden in Rockingham County, which improved more than 94 percent.
"Our coal-fired plants supply about one-third of the electricity used by Duke Power's customers," said Maurice D. McIntosh, vice president -- fossil and hydro generation. "The continued improvements of these plants will help all our customers."
The units were judged on an efficiency factor based on the amount of coal used to produce a kilowatt-hour of electricity versus the amount expected to be used. The higher the efficiency factor, the more economical the unit's operation.
Duke Power's coal-fired plants have the capacity to produce electricity at the rate of more than 7,000 megawatts. According to figures compiled by Electric Light & Power magazine, the company's fossil generating system has been the nation's most efficient for 17 consecutive years.
