FORT PITT TUNNEL TO GET $3.8 MILLION FACELIFT

PITTSBURGH, June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today outlined the plans and schedule for repair and replacement of the granite face of the Fort Pitt Tunnel.
Beginning Tuesday, July 6, at 10 p.m., Cost Corporation, of Pittsburgh, will start construction of scaffolding at the south entrance to the tunnel (suburban/Greentree Hill side).
Between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., the inbound Fort Pitt Tunnel will be closed. This schedule will be in effect for the weeknights over the next two weeks.
The posted detour is: from I-279 take Exit 7B -- north 51 West End -- to the West End Circle, right turn onto Carson Street to the Fort Pitt Bridge.
Once the scaffolding and falsework screen, to shield the work and protect motorists from any debris, are completed, work will begin on removing, repairing and rehanging the granite slabs. New stainless steel anchors and angles will support each panel.
The work will continue through December of 1993.
Each slab measures 14 by 4 feet, are four inches thick and weigh over 3,500 pounds (1.75 tons).
During the term of the project, late night or weekend tunnel closings will occur. Traffic will be maintained at all times during the daylight hours and prior to and immediately following various events in the city that rely on the tunnels for access.
All schedules are subject to weather conditions.
