FORMER UNITED STATES SECRETARY OF EDUCATION NAMED TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF LUBY'S CAFETERIAS, INC.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Luby's Cafeterias, Inc. today named former United States Secretary of Education Dr. Lauro F. Cavazos to the corporation's board of directors. He replaces founder Robert M. Luby, who was named director emeritus.
Commenting on Luby's departure from the board, John B. Labourcade, chairman of the board, said, "Bob Luby's leadership of this company from 1947, when the first cafeteria was opened in San Antonio, to today with 166 cafeterias in 10 states, has been exemplary and consistent. All of us with the company owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to his visionary guidance and will to succeed."
Dr. Cavazos currently serves as adjunct professor of community health at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston and is a management and education consultant. Before serving as the secretary of education, Dr. Cavazos served as president and chief executive officer of Texas Tech University and Texas Tech University Health Science Center in Lubbock.
A native of South Texas, Dr. Cavazos grew up on the King Ranch. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at Texas Tech University, and he completed his doctoral degree in Iowa State.
Dr. Cavazos is a member of numerous committees on higher education and the author of approximately 75 publications. He has received, among other awards, the Hispanic Hall of Fame Award from the League of United Latin American Citizens and the Outstanding Leadership Award in the field of education, which was presented by President Ronald Reagan.
Robert M. Luby founded Luby's with his partner, Charles R. Johnston (deceased), in the late 1940's, bringing innovations to the concept of cafeteria-style dining. He served as president of the company until 1970 and chairman of the board until he retired in 1982. Luby has maintained a strong interest in company activities by playing a key role on the board of directors.
The board declared a cash dividend on the common stock in the amount of 13-1/2 cents per share to shareholders of record on June 11, 1993, payable on June 28, 1993. This will be the 116th consecutive quarterly dividend paid by the company.
The San Antonio based company operates 166 Luby's Cafeterias in 10 states, and its stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange (symbol LUB).
