FORMER SENATOR MITCHELL ELECTED TO UNUM BOARD OF DIRECTORS.

PORTLAND, Maine--(BUSINESS WIRE)--February 10, 1995--UNUM Corporation (NYSE:UNM) today named former United States Senator George J. Mitchell to its board of directors. The former Senate Majority Leader becomes the thirteenth member of the corporation's board.

Mitchell, 61, served as U.S. Senator from Maine for 15 years until last year when he decided not to run for re-election. He had been Senate Majority Leader since 1989. Earlier this year, he joined the Washington law firm of Verner, Lipfert, Bernhard, McPherson and Hand as special counsel.

"George Mitchell's breadth of experience, reputation and knowledge of our company will make a valuable addition to our board. His national and international perspective will be particularly beneficial to our quest for worldwide leadership in disability and special risk markets," said UNUM Chairman and Chief Executive Officer James F. A native of Waterville, Maine, Mitchell is a graduate of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, and the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. He also serves on the board of directors for The Walt Disney Co. and Federal Express Corp.
