BURLINGTON, Mass., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- ONTOS, Inc., today made two announcements to solidify new technology and product initiatives beginning later this year.
First, ONTOS announced the appointment of former International Business Machines Corporation Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer Frank T. Cary to its board of directors. Cary, who amassed a wealth of industry, business, and technological management experience in his 32-year career at IBM, will provide invaluable guidance as ONTOS directs its technology into new markets, company officials said.
"Many Fortune 500 companies are turning to object-oriented programming for the next wave of commercial applications in video, multimedia, document management, and communications," said Cary.
"ONTOS has a powerful solution to reduce the complexity associated with developing, distributing, and managing these leading-edge systems," noted Cary. Cary joined IBM in 1948. He became president of IBM in 1971, was elected chairman of the board in 1973, and served as chief executive officer from 1973 to 1981.
According to Jim Cannon, ONTOS president and CEO, Cary is the first of several new appointees to the ONTOS board planned for this fall.
New Funds Will Support Framework for "Objective Cohesive Enterprise"
Second, ONTOS announced the completion of a $8 million round of financing from its investors, led by Wolfensohn Associates L.P.
ONTOS, a pioneer in the field of object-oriented database management systems, is leveraging its expertise and unique capabilities in object technology as a means for large organizations to create an object cohesive enterprise -- a highly flexible and scalable information system (IS) infrastructure that at long last allows IS professionals, business managers, and their customers to speak the same language.
The funding will be used to develop an open, distributed computing framework for object-oriented application development and database integration encompassing the enterprise. The new framework, built on ONTOS' object database technology, has been in development since 1993 and is scheduled for beta shipments beginning in 1994.
"ONTOS has assembled a first-rate management team, exceptional technology and a realistic plan for delivering it to the marketplace," said Richard Morgan, general partner, Wolfensohn Associates L.P. and chairman of the ONTOS board. "The company is well positioned to help customers build their complex application development and data integration requirements for mainstream commercial systems."
Noted ONTOS' Jim Cannon, "ONTOS is gearing up to attack new market opportunities for our state-of-the-art object technology that require an open, dynamic framework where traditional solutions won't go the distance. We have a unique development and distribution solution for the new-wave of integrated applications that companies are building now for commercial use in a few years."
