FORMER CONGRESSMAN RAYMOND J. MCGRATH SIGNS ON AS PRESIDENT OF BEER INSTITUTE

WASHINGTON, Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Former Congressman Raymond J. McGrath (R-N.Y.) has been selected to serve as the new president of the Beer Institute, it was announced today.
"I am honored to represent an industry that provides so many Americans with one of life's simple pleasures and also is a strong contributor to the nation's economic well-being," said McGrath.
"My goal is to ensure that the industry's voice -- and the collective voices of our 80 million responsible consumers -- are heard on Capitol Hill and beyond," he said. "I will also make it a priority to inform people about the many steps this industry has taken to prevent the abuse of our products."
McGrath specifically pointed to efforts that encourage responsible drinking, including Anheuser-Busch's "Know When to Say When," Coors' "Now, Not Now," Miller's "Think When You Drink," and Stroh's "Drink Smart or Don't Start" campaigns as examples of the leadership role the brewers have taken in fighting alcohol abuse.
"For our part," said McGrath, "the Beer Institute has been very active through our Community Assistance Fund, which provides grants to groups that fight alcohol abuse at the local level; through the Safe Holiday Reminder Series, an award-winning radio public service announcement campaign against drunk driving; and through various other programs."
"Congressman McGrath brings a long history of leadership and experience to the Beer Institute," said Warren Dunn, chairman of the Miller Brewing Company and of the Beer Institute. "I am confident that he will continue to improve public understanding of the beer industry while meeting the policy challenges of the '90s."
As the representative for New York's fifth district, McGrath gained a reputation as an effective member of the House Ways and Means Committee, where he was highly regarded as a pragmatic legislator.
McGrath succeeds James C. Sanders, who retired as president of the Beer Institute last year.
The Beer Institute is the national trade association for the brewing industry. Its members include national, regional, local and international brewers in addition to the suppliers of brewing goods, services and agricultural products. The beer industry formed the institute in 1986 to promote sound public policy and civic responsibility.
