FORMAL APPROVAL RECEIVED, GLOBEX TO BEGIN TRADING IN JAPAN

CHICAGO, Feb. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- GLOBEX(R), the after hours trading systems for futures and options of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT), has received formal approval from the Japanese Ministry of Finance for the debut of GLOBEX trading in Tokyo.
Reuters Holdings PLC (NASDAQ:RTRSY) will begin the process of installing 28 terminals initially ordered by CME/CBOT member firms in Tokyo and trading is expected to begin soon. The first terminals in the Far East will join approximately 200 terminals which have been active in Chicago, New York, London and Paris since the launch of GLOBEX on June 25, 1992.
"Approval by the Ministry of Finance for GLOBEX in Japan is a most significant breakthrough in the development of this international system," said Leo Melamed, chairman of GLOBEX Corp., the joint venture of the CME and CBOT. "At last, GLOBEX will be operative in all three world time zones."
Jack Sandner, chairman of the CME said: "Locating GLOBEX trading terminals in Tokyo adds a significant and critical piece to the global trading tapestry, as does our decision to add afternoon trading hours for CME currency and interest rate products beginning March 4."
Pat Arbor, chairman of the CBOT said: "The Japanese have been active participants in the market for U.S. T-Bond futures, offered by the Chicago Board of Trade, and we anticipate that the GLOBEX terminals in Tokyo will add participation to this market."
Peter Job, Reuters' managing director and chief executive said: "No major international product like GLOBEX is complete without the addition of Japan to the community of customers it serves. We are grateful for the patient consideration given to this subject by the Japanese authorities and believe this will be another step in the march by the GLOBEX product towards achieving greater international liquidity."
Future expansion plans of GLOBEX include the launch of products offered by the Paris-based MATIF (Marche a Terme International de France), scheduled soon. Additional GLOBEX terminals will be activated in Hong Kong during March, and terminals will be installed in Geneva, Switzerland later this spring.
CME, CBOT, GLOBEX and Reuters officials are currently in talks with a number of exchanges around the world regarding participation in the system.
