FORGING FURNACE SAVES AT ERIE BOLT
FORGING FURNACE SAVES AT ERIE BOLT ERIE, Pa., Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Erie Bolt Corporation announced
today that they have installed a state-of-the-art natural gas rapid fire forging furnace, the first of its kind in the United States.
A cooperative effort between Erie Bolt and National Fuel's Technology Assessment and Demonstration Project group has made the installation possible. According to Harry Brown, president of Erie Bolt Corporation, "National Fuel has demonstrated the type of cooperation that should be used as a model by our state and federal government to assist industry in preserving our valuable natural resources, while technologically advancing manufacturing in providing a competitive edge in the market place." National Fuel is a natural gas utility serving customers in western New York and northwestern Pennsylvania. The furnace is a computer controlled gas fired "walking beam" unit, with an externally mounted radiation pyrometer. The forging temperature is pre-set, based on the ideal limits for the material in process, and individual part temperature is monitored and recorded via the radiation pyrometer. Fuel, air, and ignition is monitored at all times, and automatically adjusted to guarantee the most efficient use of the energy available, and to ensure the quality of the part is at the highest level attainable in this process. Preliminary studies have shown that part quality has improved significantly through the elimination of forge scale, fuel costs have been cut by two-thirds, and productivity has increased by eighty percent. Additional savings are anticipated through increased tool life, reduced set-up times for furnace change-over, and reduced furnace maintenance costs. "Another prime consideration in our choice of equipment was the employee working environment," stated Brown when asked about furnace design, "the forge operator is typically subjected to an extreme high temperature condition throughout the shift, this contributes to fatigue, low productivity, and in some cases, marginal quality. The rapid fire furnace has improved the working environment, substantially, contributing to increased productivity and significant improvement in product quality." Rapid Technologies, the manufacturer of the high-tech furnace, is located in Newnan, Georgia. Although the concept was developed in England over 20 years ago, Rapid has been marketing this process in this country for the last two years. -0- 1/21/92 /CONTACT: Harry Brown of Erie Bolt, 814-456-4287; or Arthur Coon of National Fuel, 716-857-7925 or Ed Dailey of Rapid Technologies, 404-251-8175/ (NFG) CO: Erie Bolt Corp.; National Fuel Gas Co.; Rapid Technologies ST: Pennsylvania, Georgia, New York IN: MNG SU: SB -- NY106 -- 1965 01/21/92 15:16 EST
