FORD VICE PRESIDENT UNVEILS 1993 PROBE

FORD VICE PRESIDENT UNVEILS 1993 PROBE
 DETROIT, Jan. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Five of the nation's best-selling

vehicles, truck sales leadership and a host of new products give Ford dealers reason for optimism in 1992, a Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) executive said here today.
The 1993 Ford Probe will go on sale in June as a domestic model after preview showings at major auto shows around the country, according to Ross H. Roberts, Ford vice president and Ford Division general manager. The new model features a dramatic cab-forward design with a cowl nearly three inches lower than the current model. A right-hand- drive version of the new Probe also will be available for export.
Speaking at a news conference prior to the opening of the North American International Auto Show, Roberts said a sporty new F-Series Flareside pickup truck will start appearing in quantities at Ford dealerships this month. He promised additional 1993 model product announcements at next month's Chicago Auto Show.
"Over the past year, Ford Division has introduced more new products than during any similar period in the division's history," Roberts said. "We began the model year with an all-new full-sized Crown Victoria last spring, followed by a new full-sized van lineup, major redesigns for the F-Series pickup, Bronco and Taurus, and two new four-door Escort models."
Ford's North American International Auto Show display also has several new concept vehicles, including a four-wheel-drive version of its new F-Series Flareside called "SuperFlare." The concept truck has a "duck tail" spoiler that opens to the pickup box and a roll bar that runs from the front-wheel opening to the back of the cab.
"Don't be surprised if something similar to SuperFlare shows up as a production model one of these days," Roberts said.
The Ford executive noted that Ford dealers closed out the 1991 calendar year with five of the nation's 10 best-selling vehicles -- F-Series, Taurus, Explorer, Escort and Ranger.
F-Series was the industry's best-selling vehicle -- car or truck -- for the 10th consecutive year and helped Ford claim combined car and truck sales leadership by a margin of 106,268 units over its closest competitor.
Ford also retained its title as the industry's truck sales leader for a sixth straight year with an especially strong performance from its hot-selling Explorer line of sport utility vehicles.
"Explorer jumped from 20th place on the industry's list of top- selling vehicles in 1990 to seventh place in 1991," Roberts said. "It set a record for compact utility sales last year and has been a segment leader virtually since its introduction two years ago."
