FORD TO SPONSOR SENIOR PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP
DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Ford Motor Company

(NYSE: F) will become the title sponsor of the FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship in 1993, it was announced today by PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane R. Beman and Robert L. Rewey, vice president-Sales Operations, Ford North American Automotive Operations.
The FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship is a $1 million event designated as one of the four Senior Slam tournaments and is contested annually at the Tournament Players Club of Michigan in Dearborn.
Attracting one of the strongest, if not the strongest fields on the Senior TOUR, the FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship will be held June 21-27, 1993, with Dave Stockton back to defend the title he won this year in dramatic fashion over J.C. Snead and Lee Trevino.
"We are very excited by Ford's substantial commitment to golf and to the community," said Beman. "This is certainly one of the most prestigious events on the Senior TOUR and Ford has a long-standing dedication to excellence.
"The SENIOR PLAYERS has already made a positive impact in the community through charity and with Ford's association, the charitable element should continue to grow," added Beman.
"Sponsoring the SENIOR PLAYERS Championship aligns Ford with a prestigious golf event and will provide excellent marketing and promotional opportunities for all Ford products," said Rewey. "We are looking forward to working with the PGA TOUR to produce a best-in-class tournament that reflects favorably on our World Headquarters community in Dearborn."
Rewey said a number of Ford components would participate including Ford Division, Lincoln-Mercury Division, Ford Parts and Service Division, Truck Operations, Climate Control Division, Electrical and Fuel Handling Division, Electronics Division, Glass Division, Plastic and Trim Products Division, Ford Motor Credit Company and Ford Motor Land Development Corporation.
"These activities will work together to develop tournament-related programs that involve employees, dealers and suppliers in a total promotional effort for the Ford family of products and services," explained Rewey. "We'll also be working closely with the charitable organizations that benefit from the tournament's success."
The tournament benefits a number of charitable organizations in the Detroit area including the Boy Scouts of America (Detroit area council), Henry Ford Health Systems, Beaumont Hospital and the Oakwood Hospital Foundation.
The FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship was first contested in 1983 and lists among its winners names like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Chi Chi Rodriguez and Billy Casper. It relocated to the Detroit metropolitan area in 1990 at Dearborn Country Club and moved to the Nicklaus-designed TPC of Michigan in 1991.
The 1993 FORD SENIOR PLAYERS Championship will once again be televised nationally by ABC Sports.
