FORD TO ESTABLISH DEALERS IN CHINA

DEARBORN, Mich., April 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The familiar Ford blue oval will begin to appear on signs in major mainland Chinese cities over the next few months as Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) recruits dealers to sell vehicles exported from North American assembly plants.
The company expects to have six or more dealers signed up in the People's Republic of China by year end to sell and service the Ford Tempo, Taurus, Crown Victoria and Aerostar and the Lincoln Town Car through Ford North American Export Sales.
Ford plans to have dealer representation in the cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Shenyang and Dalian by mid-year. Sales of about 1,000 units are anticipated for the second half of 1993, primarily to governmental offices and joint ventures between Chinese and Western companies.
The Chinese automotive market is about 1 million units a year -- 80 percent domestic and 20 percent import. The Chinese government predicts sales in excess of 2 million a year by the end of the decade as a result of the continuing growth and strength of private enterprise.
Ford produces the Tempo at assembly plants in Kansas City and Oakville, Ontario, Taurus in Atlanta and Chicago, Crown Victoria in St. Thomas, Ontario, Aerostar in St. Louis, and Lincoln Town Car in Wixom, Mich.
