FORD TAURUS AND F-SERIES REMAIN ON TOP

DETROIT, July 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Following on the heels of success in 1992, Ford (NYSE: F) has grabbed the best-selling car and truck title for the first six months of 1993. The Ford Taurus is the nation's top car, and the Ford F-Series remains the first choice of American buyers for truck, and any vehicle -- car or truck.
Ford Division continues to have five of the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the country, a record it has held since 1991. The five are F-Series (No. 1), Taurus (No. 3), Ranger (No. 4), Explorer (No. 8) and Escort (No. 10). Also all have leadership in their segment, as does Thunderbird, Mustang, Bronco, Club Wagon and Econoline, bringing to 10 the number of segments led by Ford Division.
For the second month in a row, Ford Division set an all-time sales record in June for total number of trucks sold -- 158,790 -- more than any vehicle division ever, thus beating its own record set just in May.
Overall Ford Division truck sales were up 13 percent for the first six months compared to the same period last year, and car sales were up 10 percent. Among the big winners was Ford Thunderbird, up 55 percent, spurred on by the popular One-Look Thunderbird program.
Sales of the Ford Probe, which was introduced as an all-new 1993 model, jumped by 79 percent. Another new offering, the Ford Ranger compact pickup, saw sales climb by 21 percent.
Not only have sales increased, but so has Ford Division's share of the vehicle market. Ford Division's share stands at 20.5 percent, its highest level since 1978.
