Comments: The following may be attributed to Robert L. Rewey, vice president-Marketing and Sales Operations, Ford North American Automotive Operations:
"Ford is quite proud of our many accomplishments during the just- concluded 1993 model year, a challenging one for the entire automotive industry. Although the nation's economic recovery so far has been slower than hoped for, we expect continuing improvement in market conditions during the 1994 model year. Moreover, Ford entered the Fourth Quarter with sales momentum, having increased our car and truck volume by 10 and 18 percent respectively over the 1992 model year. We will be introducing a number of exciting new products throughout the next 12 months, which should stimulate the retail volume of Ford and Lincoln-Mercury dealers, along with their market share."
"We're confident that, when final industry figures are available, Ford will be the only major manufacturer to have increased both its car and truck share for two consecutive model years, and Ford's share of the total vehicle market to have reached its highest level since 1978. Five of the top 10 vehicle nameplates again were Ford products. In a year when the truck market established an all-time high, a remarkable three of the top four sellers were Fords. The F-Series pickup was America's most popular vehicle, car or truck, for the 12th consecutive year, while Taurus was the No. 1 car, reaching a new model year volume peak (399,573). Significantly, every one of our truck entries achieved a model year sales rise, with Explorer (301,668) and Ranger (311,406) each setting records. Both led their market segments, as did Econoline/Club Wagon and Bronco."
"Ford Division was the total vehicle sales leader for the seventh straight model year, again finishing number one in both cars and trucks. Lincoln-Mercury Division once more earned fifth place in the car market, and third place among domestic franchises; sales of the new Lincoln Mark VIII totaled 28,877 (up almost five-fold, despite not being late introduced until late December) and the Mercury Sable set another record (121,856 units). Additionally, Lincoln-Mercury dealers celebrated their arrival in the growing truck market by capturing a 1.2 percent share with the new Mercury Villager minivan."
