Comments: The following may be attributed to Robert L. Rewey, vice president - Marketing and Sales Operations, Ford North American Automotive Operations
"Ford's total vehicle volume in May was above the prior year for the eighteenth month in a row. Our total car volume rose for the seventeenth consecutive month, with the impetus coming from individual retail customers. Total Ford truck sales of 163,453 in May were an all-time record for any month and 27 percent above May, 1992."
"We're particularly pleased with the May sales performance of our major new 1993 model products -- the Ford Probe (up 89 percent over May, 1992) and Ranger (up 27 percent), the Lincoln Mark VIII (up almost nine-fold) and the all-new Mercury Villager, which continued to sell at a torrid pace, establishing another new monthly sales record."
"The Ford Taurus remained America's best-selling car. And the Mercury Sable's year-to-date volume has climbed 13 percent above the 1992 level. In fact, in the eight months since the start of the 1993 model year, combined Taurus and Sable sales already have surpassed 350,000 units."
"Among other notable highlights, both the Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar again registered dramatic volume jumps in May, as growing numbers of consumers recognized their outstanding value. The Ford F-Series pickup remained America's best-selling vehicle, car or truck. And once again, no single sales competitor came close to challenging Ford Explorer as America's favorite utility vehicle."
"Importantly, the automotive market definitely seems to have positive momentum, as the seasonally adjusted annual selling rate in April and May approached 14.5 million total vehicles up from only 13.0 million in January."
