Comments: The following may be attributed to Robert L. Rewey, vice president-Marketing and Sales Operations, Ford North American Automotive Operations:
"Ford's total vehicle volume in April was above the prior year for the 17th month in a row. Our total car volume rose for the 16th consecutive month, while Ford's total truck sales in March increased 12 percent."
"We're particularly pleased with the April sales performance of our major new 1993 model products -- the Ford Probe (up 53 percent over April 1992) and Ranger (up 21 percent), the Lincoln Mark VIII (up more than five-fold) and the all-new Mercury Villager, which established another new monthly sales record.
"The Ford Taurus continued to widen its leadership as America's best-selling car. And the Mercury Sable's year-to-date volume has climbed 13 percent above the 1992 level. In fact, since the start of the 1993 model year, combined Taurus and Sable sales already have surpassed the significant 300,000 unit milestone in just seven months."
"Among other notable April highlights, both the Ford Thunderbird and Mercury Cougar again registered dramatic volume jumps of 58 and 38 percent respectively, as growing numbers of consumers recognized their outstanding value. The Ford F-Series pickup remained America's best-selling vehicle, car or truck, for the month and the year-to-date. And once again, no single sales competitor came close to challenging Ford Explorer as America's favorite utility vehicle, despite our capacity constraints."
"Importantly, the automotive market appears to be accelerating its positive momentum, as there now have been three substantial month-to- month improvements in succession. We estimate that final April figures, when they become available, will indicate a seasonally adjusted annual selling rate above 14 million total vehicles for the first time since September of 1990 and the strongest total truck market since August of 1989."
