Comments: The following may be attributed to Robert L. Rewey, vice president - Sales Operations, Ford North American Automotive Operations:
"The market's strength in recent months is encouraging, especially the return of individual consumers to the car market. Ford and Lincoln- Mercury dealers reported that their total retail car sales during the Fourth Quarter were almost 30 percent above a year ago. For all of 1992, our U.S. car and truck volume rose by 8 and 15 percent, respectively. Consequently, Ford Motor Company was the only major manufacturer, domestic or foreign, to expand both its car and truck market share. Our share of the total vehicle market (cars + trucks) rose by more than 1.5 percentage points, reaching its highest level since 1978."
"While 1992 was another challenging year for both Ford and the industry, our company achieved a number of significant successes. Ford products accounted for a remarkable three of America's top four selling trucks in 1992 and five of the top ten vehicles. For the seventh year in a row, Ford Division captured truck sales leadership, expanding the margin over its nearest rival by an estimated 95,000 units from 1991 to approximately 280,000. With a sales lead of roughly 215,000 cars, Ford Division was No. 1 in total vehicles (cars and trucks) for the sixth consecutive year, by nearly half a million sales. For the second year in a row, Lincoln-Mercury finished fifth in the car market, and third among domestic divisions."
"Among our individual product sales highlights for the full year, the F-Series pickup once again reigned as America's best selling vehicle, car or truck, for the eleventh straight year. Both the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable reached their highest market shares ever. Other car lines with substantial year-to-year sales gains included the Ford Crown Victoria, Thunderbird and Tempo, along with the Mercury Topaz. Both the Ford Aerostar minivan and our full-size Econoline/Club Wagon topped last year's volume, by 13 percent and 35 percent, respectively. Our medium-/heavy-duty truck sales climbed 28 percent. And Explorer, the most successful compact utility vehicle in history, established a new sales record of 306,681 units -- up more than 56,000 over last year, despite the entry of new competition."
"Initial public acceptance of our new 1993 products reinforces the conviction of Ford and Lincoln-Mercury dealers that they can capture a growing share of the market in the months ahead. Moreover, the recent rebound in consumer confidence suggests a continuing economic recovery, which should translate into an opportunity to carve a bigger slice of a bigger pie."
