Comments: The following may be attributed to Robert L. Rewey, vice president - Sales Operations, Ford North American Automotive Operations.
"Ford is proud of our many accomplishments during the just-concluded 1992 model year, a difficult one for the entire automotive market. Although the economic recovery has been slow, we expect better market conditions during the 1993 model year. Moreover, Ford is entering the Fourth Quarter with sales momentum, and the exciting new 1993 cars and trucks we are introducing should stimulate the retail volume of Ford and Lincoln-Mercury products, along with the market share of our dealers."
"We're confident that, when final industry figures are available, Ford will be the only major manufacturer to increase both its car and truck share for the model year. Five of the top eight nameplates were Ford products. Over the past twelve months, trucks have provided the impetus in the recovery of total vehicle volume, with many car owners crossing over to compact utilities, vans and pickups. Ford dealers, seizing the opportunity, simply had a great truck year, as they retained the total sales crown for the seventh year in a row and captured a remarkable three of the top four positions in the market. Our F-Series pickup was America's most popular vehicle, car or truck, for the 11th consecutive year, while Explorer and Ranger remained the best selling compact utility and compact pick-up, respectively. (Explorer sales for the model year were a record 292,000 units, up 20 percent.) Our all-new Econoline/Club Wagon once more was the best selling full-size van/bus, with an impressive gain of 21 percent. And Bronco again led the large utility segment by a wide margin."
"Ford Division not only was total vehicle sales leader for the sixth straight model year, but also finished number one in both cars and trucks. The Lincoln-Mercury Division again earned fifth place in the car market, led by a 19 percent rise in sales of the redesigned Sable. (Notably, both Sable and Ford Taurus earned their best market share since being introduced seven years ago.)"
