Comments: The following may be attributed to Robert L. Rewey, vice president - Sales Operations, Ford North American Automotive Operations
"Ford's sales in August continued to outpace the total market. Growing numbers of consumers are recognizing the superior value of our products. As a result, Ford is the only company to gain both car and truck market share this year. With Ford Motor Credit Company's interest rates on auto loans now at the lowest level since its inception in 1959, our dealers remain optimistic about their potential for further sales and share improvement in the months ahead.
"August was the ninth month in a row that Ford's truck and total vehicle volume both were up versus the prior year. Our total car volume also rose for the eighth consecutive month, with our retail sales gaining momentum as the month progressed. Year to date, Ford's total vehicle sales are more than 10 percent above the first eight months of 1991, with our truck volume ahead 17 percent.
"We're especially pleased by the continuing success of our redesigned 1992 models. Notably, sales of Mercury Sable and Ford Taurus surged in August by 40 percent and 48 percent respectively over last year's level, while our new Econoline/Club Wagon volume grew by 52 percent and our updated F-Series pickups rose by 51 percent. For the sixth straight month, Explorer sales (up 30 percent) exceeded 25,000 units. Another encouraging sign was the 43 percent expansion of our heavy truck business versus last August, suggesting an acceleration in economic activity.
"Perhaps the biggest story in this year's auto market is the recovery of total vehicle sales, with trucks providing the impetus. Many car owners are crossing over to compact utilities, vans and pickups. This reflects, not a new phenomenon, but the continuation of a major, long-term trend that shows no evidence of abating. Importantly, Ford's rising truck share now approximates 30 percent of the market. So far this year, Ford products are the sales leaders in five of the six light truck market segments where we compete and account for three of America's top four truck nameplates."
