Comments: The following may be attributed to Robert L. Rewey, vice president - Sales Operations, Ford North American Automotive Operations
"Reflecting on the first half of 1992, we see several positive signs. The automotive market in total has shown steady progress, although admittedly not as much as we would prefer. More importantly, Ford's sales growth has outpaced the market as a whole. As a result, Ford is the only company to gain both car and truck market share this year. And our share of the total vehicle market has benefited because truck sales have rebounded more robustly than car sales and our truck share is growing even more higher rapidly than our car share."
"June was the seventh month in a row that our truck and total vehicle volume both were up versus the prior year. Ford's truck sales surged by 21 percent above June, 1991. We enjoyed double-digit increases almost across-the-board, led by our F-Series pickups, ahead 32 percent, and our redesigned Econoline/Club Wagon, up 23 percent. Explorer sales climbed 17 percent, establishing yet another new volume record (28,296) for the fourth consecutive month. And our heavy truck business was 22 percent above last June, an encouraging sign of accelerating economic activity."
"Ford's total car volume also rose for the sixth consecutive month. We're especially pleased by the continuing success of the 1992 model Mercury Sable and Ford Taurus, whose combined market share in June set a new all-time record, as Taurus had its best month (36,015) since May, 1989. Cumulatively, Taurus and Sable sales have advanced 15 percent and 14 percent respectively so far this year."
"We're encouraged that the auto market's gradual recovery continued in June. It should be recognized, however, that car sales were somewhat inflated as the industry pulled ahead deliveries for daily rental companies, at their request, to accommodate a late summer spike in reservations. Looking ahead, we're hopeful that the action of the Federal Reserve last week will provide the necessary stimulus to sustain the economy's recovery from the recession. Our dealers remain optimistic about the automotive market outlook and their potential for further share gains in the months ahead."
