COMMENTS: The following may be attributed to Robert L. Rewey, vice president - Sales Operations, Ford North American Automotive Operations:
"The strength of total industry sales remains a disappointment. During January, the seasonally adjusted annual selling rate was below expectations and even lower than the pace for all of calendar 1991. This provides further support for the consensus view that government policy initiatives are required to provide the economy with some stimulus. Once consumer confidence begins to turn up, however, we're convinced that the auto market is poised for a recovery.
"We're gratified by the growing sales acceptance of our 1992 model lineup -- and particularly the redesigned Mercury Grand Marquis and Sable, Ford Crown Victoria and Taurus, F-Series and Econoline/Club Wagon. Our dealers report that their showroom traffic has been increasing in recent weeks. This is reflected in the 9-percent increase in our retail car sales in January, more than enough to offset declines in fleet business (due to lengthening of replacement cycles for daily rental 'program cars'). And Ford truck sales, which rose 11 percent from last January's level, apparently continue to be less sensitive to the weakness in consumer confidence."
