FORD MOTOR COMPANY ORDERS NEW CRAY Y-MP C90 SYSTEM
First Commercial Order For New System
EAGAN, Minn., Jan. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) has ordered and will install Cray Research's (NYSE: CYR) newest system, the CRAY Y-MP C90 supercomputer, the world's fastest general-purpose system. Ford, the first commercial customer and the first automotive company to order the CRAY Y-MP C90, will install the new system at its Engineering Computer Center in Dearborn, Mich.
The new system, which will replace a CRAY Y-MP supercomputer that Ford installed in 1989, will be used for structural analysis, crash simulation, computational fluid dynamics problems, and other types of design and testing of new Ford cars.
"Current economic conditions have touched every industry throughout America, particularly the automotive industry," said John Rollwagen, Cray Research chairman and chief executive officer. "This order from Ford for our most powerful supercomputer is proof that buying a Cray Research system is not an expense, but an investment in the future. I commend Ford for aggressively continuing to invest in technology for the future, and for its commitment to Cray Research's advancing technology."
Ford was the first American automotive company to purchase a CRAY Y-MP system. The CRAY Y-MP C90 system, announced last November, is the follow-on to that system and continues Ford's commitment to using leading-edge computational solutions for computer-aided engineering (CAE).
"Our engineers make extensive use of our current CRAY Y-MP system for new vehicle design," said Gordon Willis, director, product and manufacturing systems for Ford Car Product Development. "When we first installed a Cray Research system in 1985, our engineers primarily used the system for structural analysis and vibration simulation applications.
Today, we evaluate many functional capabilities, such as crash performance,
on the Cray system for all new vehicles. This is more cost-effective than using prototypes, and results in shorter product design time and higher customer satisfaction.
"We have substantially exceeded the capability of the CRAY Y-MP and look forward to seeing what we can accomplish with the power of the CRAY C90 system."
Cray Research has 298 supercomputers installed throughout the world, of which 164 are installed in the United States. There are 24 motor vehicle companies worldwide that use 27 Cray Research systems.
Cray Research, Inc. creates the most powerful, highest-quality computational tools for solving the world's most challenging scientific and industrial problems.
