FORD MOTOR CO. TO REPORT U.S. SALES MONTHLY

DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) today announced that, beginning in January, 1994, its U.S. sales will be reported on a monthly basis. Its final interim ("Ten Day") report, covering results for the Dec. 11-20 period, is to be issued on Dec. 23, 1993. Ford's decision to adopt a monthly reporting cycle, both internally and externally, followed an extensive assessment of all the pros and cons that began last October.
Over the nearly four decades since the inception of 10-day reporting, the U.S. auto market has changed in a number of significant ways. Fluctuations that often are attributed to shifts in the behavior of individual consumers may be due to differences in incentive timing, fleet calendarization, regional weather factors, plant schedules, etc.
Consequently, there now are variations from one 10-day period to the next that seem to exaggerate the volatility of the industry, commonly expressed as a seasonally adjusted annual rate, as well as of the imputed market shares for those companies that report. Further, although analysts routinely compensate for discrepancies in the number of selling days, no one ever has figured out how to adjust for whether a period includes one or two weekends, which can have more bearing on retail volume.
