FORD IN INDIANA - 1992

INDIANAPOLIS, March 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Although 1992 was a difficult year for the automotive industry, Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) continued to make significant contributions to the state of Indiana and its economy.
More than 8,000 people were employed in Ford's Indiana facilities, which include a steering components plant in Indianapolis (2,956), an air-conditioning systems plant in Connersville (3,400) and a fuel-system component plant in Bedford (842). The company's Financial Services Group also has a number of operations in the state.
Indiana Ford employees received more than $309 million in wages and benefits in 1992, and the company paid approximately $6.2 million in property taxes. Ford purchased $2.6 billion worth of goods from about 260 supplier plants, ranking Indiana second only to Michigan among the states where Ford does business.
Ford corporate contributions in Indiana to a variety of civic, cultural, educational and charitable organizations totaled more than $605,000. Indianapolis Plant employees donated $223,129 to the United Way; Connersville employees contributed $150,000.
 From a sales perspective, Indiana's 117 Ford and 70 Lincoln-Mercury dealers sold 55,425 Ford and 9,200 Lincoln-Mercury vehicles in 1992.
Last year, the Indianapolis Plant -- which underwent a $150 million renovation and retooling to build a variety of new steering components -- began manufacturing parts for Ford cars assembled and sold in Europe. This marked the first time the plant, the sole supplier of steering components for all Ford vehicles in North America, exported parts for European cars.
These new components -- steering columns, steering gears, steering pumps and valve assemblies -- also will be built for future Ford cars sold in North America.
This new business has added 300 jobs at the plant.
The Connersville Plant produces compressors, evaporators and condensers used in air conditioning systems, supplying approximately 75 percent of Ford's requirements. The Bedford Plant produces fuel- system components for all Ford cars and trucks, including the pump sender, the fuel pressure regulator and the hose and valve assembly.
Two of the Ford Financial Services Group's businesses -- Ford Motor Credit Company and The Associates -- maintain operations in Indiana.
Ford Credit has an office in South Bend (31 employees) and another in Indianapolis (29 employees). The South Bend branch financed 5,924 vehicles in 1992 while the Indianapolis branch financed 6,303.
The Associates, a leading consumer, commercial finance and insurance company, has 732 employees statewide. Associates Information Services, located in South Bend with 533 employees, provides telecommunications and computer programming maintenance and storage for The Associates operations worldwide.
The Associates also has a commercial financing office with 17 employees in Indianapolis. Its consumer finance operations has 18 branch offices statewide with 182 employees.
