(NYSE: F), despite a difficult year financially in 1991, continued its strong commitment to the state of Indiana and to the state's economy.
 Ford employed more than 8,000 people in its Indiana facilities, which include a steering components plant in Indianapolis (2,845), an air-conditioning systems facility in Connersville (3,335) and a fuel systems component plant in Bedford (812).
 In 1991, Indiana Ford employees received more than $270 million in wages and benefits, and the company paid approximately $5.5 million in property taxes for its Indiana facilities. Indiana ranked second among the states where Ford does business, with $2.6 billion worth of goods shipped from about 260 supplier plants.
 Through Ford Community Relations Committees, the company and its employees donated more than $700,000 to a variety of civic, cultural, educational and charitable organizations. As part of this, Indianapolis Plant employees and the company donated approximately $274,000 to the United Way.
 There are 120 Ford dealerships and 70 Lincoln-Mercury dealerships in Indiana. Together they sold more than 45,000 Ford and Lincoln-Mercury vehicles in the state for 1991.
 The Indianapolis Plant manufactured 1.7 million rotary valve steering gears in 1991, and 1.7 million rack and pinion gears. The plant also built 3 million power steering pumps and 3.5 million steering columns. Among the new products manufactured at the plant was a steering gear for the 1992 Ford Explorer and Mazda Navajo, and a truck passive restraint (air bag) column.
 The plant currently is undergoing an expansion and modernization project with an investment of close to $500 million over the next five years. The project will be completed this summer when production will begin on steering components for Ford cars manufactured in Europe and North America. About 300 new jobs will be created at the plant over the next few years.
 The Connersville Plant supplies approximately 75 percent of Ford's requirements for compressors, evaporators, and condensers used in air conditioning systems. The Bedford Plant manufactures fuel system components for all Ford cars and trucks, including the pump sender, the fuel pressure regulator and the hose and valve assembly.
 Ford's Financial Services Group -- which earned a record $927 million in 1991 -- also has operations in Indiana.
 The Associates, a leading consumer, commercial finance and insurance company, employs 820 people in the state. Associates Information Services, located in South Bend, has 650 employees. They are responsible for providing telecommunications and computer programming maintenance and storage for The Associates operations worldwide.
 Commercial financing maintains a 17-person office in Indianapolis. The Associates consumer finance operation has 19 branch offices statewide with 153 employees.
 Ford Credit has a branch office in Indianapolis with 28 employees.
